Emergency Response Team

The role of law enforcement in all cases, including riotous activity, hostage situations or barricaded subjects, execution of high risk warrants, and arrest of dangerous felons, is the protection of lives and property. In the pursuit of this goal, the Washington Indiana Police Department maintains the Emergency Response Team.

The Emergency Response Team (E.R.T.) is a team of specially trained police officers from within the Washington Police Department, which will respond to any incident where special weapons, equipment, and tactics are needed.

The E.R.T. consist of Officers that are skilled in Sniper operations, Hostage Negotiations, Explosive Breaching, Deployment of Chemical Munitions and Less Lethal Weapons, and Close Quarter Combat. The E.R.T. is under direct supervision of team commander and assistant team commander with governing authority derived through the Chief of Police.

The Mission of the E.R.T. is to serve as a specialized, mobile, and flexible unit to assist in containment, de-escalation and ultimate control of all situations beyond the capability of today's Police Officer.
