Small City... Big Possibilities

City Engineer Retires

It is a bittersweet moment for many in the City of Washington as we announce the retirement of City Engineer Ed Barnett, P.E, on June 28, 2019.  Ed has served the City for almost 33-1/2 years as the City’s full-time engineer.

As a professional engineer, Ed has been involved with most large city projects, having designed many of them and inspected the projects during construction.  Ed has been a member of the administrations of four Mayors, freely offering advice and assistance as improvement projects were accomplished.

Although Ed was a one-man department, he has interacted with many of the city employees, including department supervisors and laborers and has always been willing to help out on the job site as well as during the planning stages of projects.

“Ed has been a true advisor to me,” Mayor Wellman said, “and has always given his input and ideas when I’ve needed his assistance whenever we considered doing a project.  Ed has always been willing to meet with citizens when they’ve needed help, too.”

Ed will continue to assist the City in a part-time advisory capacity over the next year when needed but he will be sorely missed by his fellow city employees.  Please join those employees in wishing Ed the best as he begins his retirement.
