Text Box: Construction is underway on a park that will be located at the corner of N.E. 2nd and Main Street in Washington. A brick gazebo and a fountain will be the focal points of the park. Stamped concrete walks will meander through the grounds, ending at a wild flower garden to the rear of the space. Magnolias and Ornamental Pear trees will provide much needed shade of the area. The planned lighting for the area will mimic the single head street lights that have been placed on Main Street and will be strategically placed to provide the best luminescence of the grounds. Dr. Lana Helms has graciously provided the funds to place a bench near the fountain that will allow a place for rest and reflection. Friends of Seth Coy have funded a bench that will sit on the gazebo as a lasting memory to our departed “Gentle Giant”. One will also find an assortment of picnic tables and benches that will be placed throughout the park to create a haven for enjoying lunch or just taking a break. Washington will have audio speakers on the Main Street light poles that will be extended to the park. Music will be played throughout each day and be changed to fit celebrations for our different holidays and seasons. The audio will also allow for announcements to be made during parades and other events that occur in the downtown area. Local organizations will be given the opportunity to assist in planting and maintaining the flower beds that will line sidewalks and accent designated areas within the park. A timeline has been established that will begin construction of the gazebo and sidewalks by late March 2010, with completion coinciding with the construction of new sidewalks for Main Street. Landscaping will begin in late summer and early fall of this year. However, planting of many of the flower gardens will probably not occur until spring of 2011. Questions concerning the construction contract procedures, suggestions, or donations should be addressed to the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce, 1 Train Depot Street, Washington, IN 47501 or by phoning (812) 254-5262.
