Going above and beyond to become a little greener!
When you think of turning green, we all look at ways to save money. We at the City of Washington are constantly looking at thing to help in that department. We found another. What about the water tower? Looking up at the water tower at night and you will see our city’s name WASHINGTON lit up. What about the parts of the tower that don’t say anything? We decided to take care of that. Mayor Haag asked Randy Emmons (line superintendent) to ask around and to see if anyone was willing to climb the tower to do the work on top. Lineman Randy Ennis and Stacy McClure both stepped up and said they would love to take on that challenge. In the past the work on top was contracted out. So if there was a light out, the city would pay someone extra to climb up and take care of that. These linemen aren’t getting any extra pay to do this. That is what I would call going above and beyond, for the love of their community!
After the assessment of the lighting on top we decided to cut loose five lights. The lights were 100watt high pressure sodium fixtures. Cutting those five lights loose will save around $10.00 a month! That isn’t a lot to start off with, but yearly that is $120.00! There will not be any extra contractor charges for replacing bulbs any more. So that $120.00 is just all around savings.
We constantly look at ways to become greener. We are slow in this process but speeding up everyday! Look for more changes the future.
